These dogs, once homeless and traumatised, require a calm and loving environment to start trusting humans again. Despite the best efforts of dedicated staff and volunteers, who are tirelessly caring for them in the shelter, these dogs need individualised attention that only a foster home can provide. Every day spent in the shelter adds to their stress, and without the focused care of a foster family, their chances of overcoming their fears are greatly reduced.
Casper, a young male dog found in Colinas Verdes, was left behind by people who had occupied an empty house. He lived on the streets for months, sustained by kind residents but always keeping his distance. Even now, after months in the shelter, Casper still finds it hard to relax around people and is comfortable only with a few volunteers.
Peanut’s story is similar. She was found in Bensafrim, where residents noticed her following their dogs around, looking for food and companionship. Peanut avoids human contact, relying on her instincts to survive in a world she finds confusing and scary. Since her arrival at the shelter in September, Peanut still hasn’t let anyone touch her, though she does well around other dogs.
Gail Skinner, founder of Awesome Dogs Training School, explains that fostering is essential for dogs like Casper and Peanut. They need a one-on-one environment or a home with just one other dog to receive the individual attention required to build trust. By fostering, you’ll play a crucial role in helping them transition to human contact and find comfort in a home setting.
If you’ve ever thought of fostering, this could be your chance. By offering patience, compassion, and a quiet space, you can make an extraordinary difference in the lives of dogs who need a second chance. Consider fostering and join us in the mission to help Casper, Peanut, and many other dogs waiting for a warm, welcoming home.
We know that the cost of food, vet bills, and supplies can be overwhelming for foster families, which is why our shelter covers these expenses, so you can focus on giving Casper, Peanut, and other rescues the care and love they desperately need.
If you have the space, time, and compassion to help these animals heal, now is the time to step forward.
